about

Amateur Cult returns with the thumping new single ‘Eyes’, a thrill ride mix of searing art punk, krautrock, uncompromising rhythms, guttaral sax and groove laden synths.

Based along the Firth of Forth coast, Amateur Cult is a project from musician Alastair Chivers. His debut album ‘The Mirrored Pattern’ was released in 2022 on Armellodie Records, receiving praise from BBC 6Music’s Steve Lamacq, The Herald Scotland, Keep It Fast, Snack Mag and Is This Music?.

‘Eyes’ is the first fully live instrument track from Amateur Cult featuring Andrew John Cairns and Chris Laidler from stoner-sludge band Acidsaurus Bong and saxophonist Andrew Brooks, reflecting the dazzling shows the live band has played together in 2023, with sold out appearances at Edinburgh’s Leith Depot and Sneaky Pete’s as well as playing Lindisfarne Festival and Dunbar Music Festival.

Amateur Cult will co-headline Edinburgh’s Summerhall with proto punk / garage act Dragged Up on Friday 08 March. Support comes from artist / musician, samwooddoowmas.

lyrics

Can you ask yourself am I good enough?
Shine a memory and kill your friends
You take the drugs and hate the same
Ride the plaster cast, cracked and shamed.

Beat the drum
Hold the pose
Touch yourself
Break the mold

Sell yourself again to sell out all your sin
Fashion all your friends to sing out your name

You never learn taciturn
You never learn eyes on me
You never learn taciturn
Hold your eyes on me.

There's a hope and a vanity
There's a day for a reckoning
Cut out looks with a cigarette
Cut out clips with a tie dye kiss goodbye.

You can play, you can play, you can play your dream and die.
The end, the heart and the matter, the faith and the pattern, c'mon.

Keep your eyes on me

"Wonderful tune!"

- Deb Grant, BBC 6 Music New Music Fix with Tom Ravenscroft

"A heady Krautrock inspired brew that is both dangerously intoxicating and highly addictive"

- Fran Carlyon, heavymetalkids.uk

"squelching synth, motorik drums and squealing peals of sax. By the time you come back to us next month, we'll still be getting our head around 'Eyes' by Amateur Cult."

- Andrew Reilly, Snack Mag

"Something really interesting, it’s post punk, art rock, and reminds me of James Chance, The Fall and krautrock. Hold on to your hats, it’s abrasive but brilliant."

- Frankie Francis, Amazing Radio

"An absolutely stormer"

- Postcards From The Underground, Cumbernauld FM

"A wicked tune which harks back to Brian Eno era Roxy with plenty of sexy sax and post-punk angular drums."

- Dirge Magazine
